Athens

Social integration in urban solutions and placemaking strategies

THE CONTEXT

Athens is committed to increasing city accessibility and connectivity by 2030 with a focus on green spaces equipment. In line with the Athens Climate Action Plan, the project will work on improving resilience and accessibility in urban areas.

INTERVENTION AREA

Profiti Ilia Square in the neighbourhood of Rizoupoli is the pilot location. This area is in need of regeneration due to its vulnerable socioeconomic profile and its limited green and recreational spaces.

TARGET GROUPS

Human target groups: women, children, teenagers, elderly, persons with disabilities and people with low socioeconomic status.
Non-human target groups: stray dogs and cats, pigeons and insects.

PLANS

Focusing on creating a regenerated public space, the pilot aims to improve the micro-climate of the area, sustainable mobility and attractive resting areas for all ages and social groups. By using participatory approaches, residents will get involved in the project targeting biodiversity, safety and security, among other aspects.

The regeneration will be deployed in the improvement of the pavement, accessible and children-friendly infrastructure, resting shaded spaces and other potential installations.

PARTNERS

Pilot coordinated by Athens Development and Destination Management Agency (ADDMA), URBANA and FORTH.
