Solutions

Centering the attention on Nature-based Solutions, GreenInCities will develop a catalogue for project replication of green solutions that focus on activating the public space and buildings, implementing greening strategies, boosting resilience, multifunctionality, participation and cohesiveness.

By GreenInCities solutions we mean an architectural and urban installation that follows a nature-based approach, co-designed together with residents and with a holistic perspective for humans and non-humans.

The initial repository of solutions is distributed into:

New Space Functions Integrating Green

Edu greenhouse (IAAC)

Small greenhouse pavilion with educational purpose.

Eco-circular playground (LAND)

Playground materials built with more eco-friendly products and recycled materials, combined with the use of permeable sand or bark paving in play areas.

WIP

Community kitchen (University Nova Gorica)

Open air community kitchen.

Urban Green Elements

Digitally fabricated vertical food farm (IAAC)

The vertical garden is co-designed with citizens including food and medical plants. It is built with digital fabrication techniques (3D printing or milling), allowing the creation of complex shapes.

Ground-based green façade (LAND)

A green façade consisting of vines that can climb a support structure on their own. Furthermore trellis can be attached on the structure to permit diffuse greening to grow on it. Plants can be planted at the base of the wall and grow up to the top of the structure with the addition of small, light intermediate pots.

Wild meadows (LAND)

Natural meadows requiring no irrigation and low-maintenance techniques; they deploy wild local grass and herbs species to improve biodiversity and climate resilience.

Green Practices

Eat your school (yard) -rewilding playgrounds (Fjölbrautaskólinn í Breiðholti)

Design workshops implemented with teachers to rewild the schoolyards, increasing interactions with children and birds.

Forest bathing (University Nova Gorica)

Forest bathing is a practice of forest immersion to integrate medical treatments for mental well-being. It consists of different sessions in the forest and contingent measurements of the improvements.

Co-design installations with natural materials (Urbana)

Co-design installations using natural and living materials (plants, earth, straw, wood, etc) and upcycling techniques with children to appropriate public spaces

Horizontal Governance Support Systems

Digital mapping tool (Kaunas University of Technology)

Interactive digital mapping tool designed and made by citizens to safeguard local district community against top-down decision-making that prioritised private value above public interest. Each map represents local landmarks, nature, people and their stories.

Nature-building communities Model (ABUD)

A governance model for decentralised nature-building communities as a social innovation that is based on a governance network of autonomous, interdependent individuals that self-govern through decentralised policy making, engagement, and negotiations.

Social Currency (University Nova Gorica)

The social currency is meant to offer a crediting opportunity to people with less “money” capacity (elders, children and immigrants) and will be organised only on green and sustainable services and products.
