Climate shelters for all: Caring for communities and nature

THE CONTEXT

Sant Adrià de Besòs seafront and Besòs river mouth are facing a renaturalization process which will enhance local residents' empowerment and biodiversity.

INTERVENTION AREA

The GreenInCities pilot project is located in the Besòs area, specifically at the Besòs River Mouth in the municipality of Sant Adrià de Besòs, on a wildlife shelter viewpoint.

This area faces historical and significant social, urban and environmental challenges, including high levels of deprivation, social segregation, severe climate conditions, and an inhospitable environment for non-human life.

TARGET GROUPS

Human target groups: users of public spaces, primarily individuals facing social and urban challenges.

Non-human target groups: Mediterranean  river flora, amphibians, reptiles, small birds, butterflies.

PLANS

The project aims to transform the area through nature-based solutions by creating a new observation point and open-air lab and a naturalised area that will function as a climate shelter, prioritising the needs of both human and non-human stakeholders.

This intervention will provide thermal relief during extreme weather events, particularly benefiting vulnerable populations by mitigating heat islands and increasing available shade. In addition, the project will promote activities compatible with the river mouth, enhancing biodiversity and promoting a healthier ecosystem, supporting both the environment and community well-being.

PARTNERS

Pilot coordinated by CB, PEMB, Mcrit and IAAC.
