Helsinki

Regenerating public spaces and green areas to overcome social barriers

THE CONTEXT

Helsinki’s City strategy 2021-2025 highlights “Ambitious climate objectives and nature conservation“ and “Cultivate safe neighbourhoods with distinctive identities”, two central points in the GreenInCities pilot.

INTERVENTION AREA

Longinoja Park is the pilot location, between the Malmi district, with a high risk of degradation and deteriorated public spaces, and the new Malminkenttä area. The Longinoja park represents an opportunity to connect and overcome social barriers within the two districts.

TARGET GROUPS

Human target groups: mixed socio-economic background, children and young people, single parents and immigrants.

Non-human target groups: autochthonous species from the Loginoja Valley and flying squirrels.

PLANS

The pilot will address issues such as the heat islands and heavy rains, developing the meadow environment to preserve biodiversity while strengthening connections between Malminkenttä and old Malmi. By implementing greenery and new solutions, the area will increase livelihood, comfort and safety.

The Longinoja Park will be one of the centre points of action by developing new routes for pedestrians and cyclists, building a small-scale ecological stormwater management solution and enhancing biodiversity.

PARTNERS

Pilot coordinated by Forum Virium Helsinki and the City of Helsinki Urban Environment Department.
