Considering health effects of urban infrastructure in the city facilities

THE CONTEXT

The city aims to develop an internationally innovative leisure and medical spa resort by 2030. It targets medical tourism by developing infrastructures such as parks, bike roads, or climate therapy spaces, among other services such as educational programmes or new playgrounds.

INTERVENTION AREA

The intervention area is the Nemunas embankment, built to protect the city from floods. However, sustainable use and greening were not considered when the infrastructure was designed.

TARGET GROUPS

Human target groups: aging population, medical patients, kids and families.

Non-human target groups: autochthonous species related to thermal water environment.

PLANS

The project aims to apply sustainable development methods for implementing renewable energy sources and restricting or banning car traffic. By enhancing the quality of public spaces, pedestrians will be better accommodated more safely and comfortably in the Nemunas River promenade.

PARTNERS

Pilot coordinated by the Municipality of Birštonas and Kaunas University of Technology.
