Cork

Focusing on urban spaces for a better quality of life

THE CONTEXT

The city has multiple plans and strategies in place to address climate change and regenerate deprived areas, including the RAPID programme, which is an integrated area-based multi-stakeholder coordination mechanism with participatory practices.

INTERVENTION AREA

The City Northwest Quarter is the pilot site, a residential and industrial area considered one of the most deprived areas in Cork and Ireland. It has a hard-built landscape with little greenery and underdeveloped public spaces.

TARGET GROUPS

Human target groups: women, children, elderly and people with low socioeconomic status.

Non-human target groups: birds, bees, bugs and urban wildlife.

PLANS

The challenges include regenerating the built environment, enhancing multifunctionality, and creating new green areas through participation and environmental education.

Spaces will be constructed by using circular economy principles, addressing adaptation and exploring the potential of green spaces for better air quality and efficient energy use.

PARTNERS

Pilot coordinated by the Municipality of Cork and the University College of Cork.
